We all struggle when it comes to helping our family, friends, colleague, juniors, or bosses. Our biases, our stories, our narrative, our own experience of life, our language, all this takes away the attention to the issue at hand how we see the issues and what should be the possible solution. But the need is that we help the person in context navigate through his/her emotions and be able to figure out themselves what should be the next course of action. The coach's job is to do that, and we all at various levels need to act as coaches to people in our life.
This is where I have seen that Clean Language is a very powerful tool. This is a questioning and discussion technique used especially for discovering, exploring, and working with people's own personal metaphors. The word 'metaphor' here refers to thinking or expressing something in terms of a different concept or image. Clean Language is a simple set of questions developed by counseling psychologist David Grove. These questions are used with a person's own words to direct their attention to some aspect of their own experience.
Using Clean Language to explore a person's own metaphors creates a bridge between the conscious and unconscious minds, enhancing self-awareness and self-understanding. This is a powerful aid for helping people achieve the desired change, and can massively help a coach and coachee during the coaching process. Clean Language helps people to explore their own thinking in their own way, to uncover patterns that keep them stuck, and to find their own creative solutions.
In this workshop let's deep dive into Clean Language and learn how o use it.
